Rage Against The Machine

Rage Against The Machine is also known as RATM and began in Los Angeles in 1991. The band members are Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello (Vocals), Tim Commerford (bassist), and Brad Wilk (drummer). RATM got its inspiration not only from alternative and rock bands but from rappers and heavy metal as well. This band has a very different style that incorporates all of these different types of genres. The band released their first album that was self-titled in 1992. It wasn’t until 1996 that the band released their third album called “Evil” which was on the top 200 billboards. And their most famous single “Bulls on Parade” was performed on SNL the same year. The band became the most popular and political band in modern music in 1999. The band was definitely risky with their music and sends empowering messages. After breaking up around 2000 Monello went solo called “One man’s revolution” which was released in 2007. In 2008 the band did reunite and played live around the world in 2008-2009. RATM’s style rhymes the lyrics with drums and guitars carrying the words. There has not been any band that has copied this type of music.

The Raconteurs

The Raconteurs is a four man group that consists of Jack White (vocals, guitar), Brendan Benson(vocals, guitar), Jack Lawrence (bass) and Patrick Keeler (drums). The alternative, indie rock band was formed in Detroit, Michigan in 2005. The band has only released two albums (Broken Boy Soldiers) 2006 and Consolers of the Lonely) 2008. The song "Steady as She Goes" peaked number 1 on alternative music charts in the US. Their first tour was in Britain were they were able to fill out small venues which is unusual for a new band and  they have opened for big artists like Bob Dylan. The band has a sound that is calming and at the same time has a hint of chaos, not knowing how the song will progress. The Band is sure to gain momentum and has already had sold out shows in America.

Smashing Pumpkins

The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band was formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1988. Formed by Billy Corgan (vocals/guitar) and James Iha (guitar / backing vocals), the band has included D'arcy Wretzky (bass guitar / backing vocals), Jimmy Chamberlin (drums/percussion), and Melissa Auf der Maur (bass guitar). The Smashing Pumpkins developed success and mainstream hits with their second album, “Siamese Dream” in 1993 with hits such as “cherub rock”. The group developed a double album called, “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” in 1995.This debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart and became platinum. With an estimate of 18.25 million albums sold in the United States. In 2000 smashing pumpkins slowly began to fade in 1996 because of the drug use that the drummer and keyboardist abused.  In 1998 that band replaced the members and started recording again but the direction of the music was moody and angry making it difficult to advertise the records. In 2000 the band decided to go their separate ways. In 2007 to 2009 there have been several different band member replacements in the band and currently today and released albums called, “If All Goes Wrong,”and “Teargarden by Kaleidyscope. I believe the newer albums released have less potential and can’t replace the success of the original band members music from their “Siamese Dream” album.

Nirvana is an American rock band formed by Kurt Cobain (lead vocalist, guitarist) and   Krist Novoselic (bassist) in 1987. The band had many drummers but the longest one in the band was Dave Grohl who joined in 1990. Many of you have heard of him from the "Foo Fighters" as the lead vocalist. Nirvana’s first single was in 1988 and called, “ Love Buzz/Big Cheese” and the next year released the band released its first album called “bleach” with a record label called, Sub Pop. The earlier songs nirvana recorded had more of a raunchy and angry tone to it as the band progressed into their most famous break through release album called “Nevermind”. On this album was their first hit single called, “Smells like a Teen Spirit” followed by other popular songs such as, “Breed” and “In Bloom”.  The songs on this album had a lighter tempo and leaned more to a quiet sound. In January 1992 the album reached number one on the billboard charts beating out Michael Jackson’s album dangerous. The band got the opportunity to play at the “MTV music video awards” where the producers were the first to hear another famous song called “rape me” during their rehearsal. MTV refused to let them play the song during the broadcast calling it offensive. In 1993 the band released another album called, “in utero”. This album reached number one on the billboard charts on September 1993 with singles “All apologies” and, “Heart Shaped Box”. The band’s last performance was in December 1993 at an MTV “unplugged” performance. On April 8 1994 Kurt Cobain was found dead from a shotgun wound to the head.  After the death the remaining band members decided to go separate ways musically. Nirvana is very unique compared to other alternative bands and delivers emotion through the poetic lyrics.
